Linked Settings

Linked Settings

Many of the per-page settings in Octavo have controls for whether they are ‘linked’. This allows you to choose whether the current page shares its settings with the rest of the document, or whether it uses separate per-page settings. This choice is made for each type of setting: it is possible for a page to have linked settings for Content Scaling, but its own per-page settings for Filters, for example.

A two-choice Linked control

The above image shows the control for choosing between document-linked or per-page settings for the selected page. The choice applies to the settings in the box below the control.

For some settings in the Source Page pane, there is a third choice:

A three-choice Linked control

Here you can choose between document-linked, source-linked, and per-page. Source-linked means the settings apply to everything from that source PDF. This is useful if you have a document make up of a compilation of different PDFs, and maybe one PDF has been scanned slightly askew, or another one needs converting to greyscale.

Powerful but tricky

Octavo’s use of linked settings can be really powerful once you get used to it. However, it can be a source of confusion at first. I suggest you get into the habit of always glancing at the link control, so that you know what the scope of your adjustments will be.
