Page Numbers

Page Numbers

The Page Numbers section lets you add, position, and style page numbers on your output.

The inspector has a link control, so you can configure page numbers for the whole document or override them per page.

Settings

Show Page Numbers

The master toggle. Turn this on to add page numbers to your output, or off to hide them entirely. (Like all the other settings, this one obeys its link control, so if you unlink the settings, you can have page numbers turned on for some pages and not others.)

Position

A 3×2 grid of positions: the six corners and centre-edge positions of the page (top inside, top centre, top outside, bottom inside, bottom centre, bottom outside). The positions are all relative to the spine (unless you’re using an imposition style that doesn’t have a spine, such as single sided one-up). Click to choose where the page number appears.

  • Horizontal Inset — How far the page number is inset from the left or right edge.
  • Vertical Inset — How far the page number is inset from the top or bottom edge.

The insets can also be adjusted by dragging the page number around in the view.

Appearance

  • Font — Click the font button to choose the typeface and size for page numbers.
  • Colour — A colour well for the page number text colour.

Format

Style

Choose the numbering style from the dropdown: 1, 2, 3 / i, ii, iii / I, II, III / a, b, c / A, B, C.

Start From

A number field that sets the starting page number. Useful if your document doesn’t start at page 1.

Prefix

Text to display before the page number (e.g., “Page ”).

Suffix

Text to display after the page number (e.g., ” of 20”).

Pad with Zeros

Enable this checkbox to pad page numbers with leading zeros (e.g., 01, 02, 03 instead of 1, 2, 3).

Background

A dropdown to add a shape behind the page number. Choose from:

  • None — No background.
  • Rectangle — A rectangular background.
  • Rounded — A rounded rectangle.
  • Circle — A circular background.

When a background shape is selected:

  • Padding — How much space between the number and the edge of the shape.
  • Corner Radius — The corner rounding (only for Rounded).
  • Colour — The fill colour of the background shape.

Exclusions

  • Skip covers (first and last) — Enable to omit page numbers from the first and last pages of the document. This option is for convenience — you could accomplish the same thing by unlinking the settings on the first/last pages and disabling page numbers on each of them. But since its a common case, this checkbox makes it easier.
  • Skip blank pages — Enable to omit page numbers from blank pages.
